Charitable gambling is one form of gambling that is sure to help out society and because of that, it is legal just about everywhere in the United States. While there are many questions about the social impact of other forms of gambling, no one can argue against the fact that charitable gambling does a lot of good for a lot of positive organizations. In short, this is a form of gaming that receives a special pass from local and state governments. This pass enables companies to put on event that involve gambling for the purpose of raising money for charities.
History of Charitable Gambling
Charitable gambling is a relatively new idea for major companies in America. Some of the earliest forms of this profitable venture are traced back to athletic events. There, teams held “50/50” raffles, where half of the money goes to a local charity and half of the money is given to the winner of the raffle. Other forms of social charitable gambling have evolved over time, as well. Casino nights have come about in the last 25 years and have grown in popularity during that time.
The history of charitable gambling is closely tied to the government rulings which help it run. Federal and state governments have been traditionally very scared of any type of gambling, so they often shy away when presented with the proposition of charity gaming. In the last ten years, more state governments have seen the many positives presented by this activity and they have begun to allow it. Special ordinances were issued to over 3,000 businesses in 2007 for the purpose of charity gambling.
Forms of Charitable Gambling
There are many different types of charitable gambling, all of which go to benefit good causes. Some of these are more popular for various groups than others, but they all tend to raise a good bit of money depending upon the circumstances.
50/50 Raffle – This is a type of game where people buy raffle tickets for the chance to win money. When all of the tickets have been sold, a winning raffle ticket is selected from a container. Then, the proceeds are split in half. One portion of the money is given to the holder of the raffle ticket, while the other half is donated to some worthy charity.
Casino Night – Many big organizations are hosting this type of event in order to raise money. Here, “chips” are bought from the organization and players play in a casino type of setting. At the end of the night, chips can be cashed in for various donated prizes, while the proceeds from the purchase of those chips can be donated to charity.
